Monmouth Park Polo Classic
A New Oceanport Sports Foundation Tradition
About The Oceanport Sports Foundation
History
The Oceanport Sports Foundation was the result of many hours of conversation between two friends. Each agreed that the community needed a helping hand to address the great demand on its facilities and programs that simply couldn't be passed along to the taxpayers. These two gentlemen learned that many other recreation minded residents had reached the same conclusion. Among these were Lee Poole, George Karpus, John Carroll, John Feiter, Joe Henderson, John O'Connell, Jim Hoffman, Tom Thomasian, Jim Gallo, Michael Tober & a host of dedicated supporters. With the help of Dave Chachko (our first chairman) and Glenn Miller (our first secretary/treasurer), Rick Karinja & Michael Mahon, this charitable organization was formed. The initial Board of Trustees came from the ranks of President of each of the sports associations actively involved in recreation programs serving Oceanport residents, young and old. Each year the Foundation works diligently to raise funds for its grant program. And each year, funds have been distributed for a variety of purposes benefiting the community. Ranging from gymnasium mats, basketball courts, park water fountains, score boards and many other worthy endeavors, the Foundation has met needs that simply could not be funded by the local government or through fees assessed to the program participants. Today, this organization is headed by a new Chairman Kevin Mills and a new Vice Chairman Thomas Schiavone. Together with local government, members of the local sports associations, members of the Foundation are joined by Monmouth Park Racetrack in an unprecedented effort to give back to the community of Oceanport, the host community of the 2007 Breeders' Cup Championship. This 2nd annual event will be held on October 4th. A portion of the proceeds of this event will benefit a well known equine charity as well, ReRun Inc. In keeping with the goal of the Breeders' Cup and Monmouth Park to benefit charitable organizations within the horse racing community.
